I've been reading about the dreadful statistics on Irish binge drinking and on liver damage. Although not surprising, it's very shocking, and particularly for women. Our poor lady livers.
Irish women are now the fourth heaviest drinkers in the world, only beaten by the women in Lithuania, Moldova, and the Czech Republic. The national rate of liver disease has doubled in recent years.
There's also been a drive to increase our awareness of fatty liver disease: fatty foods and sugar are another way of abusing this poor organ. Without any alcohol at all, fatty tissue can form on the liver and cause damage. Our national liver is not looking its shapeliest...
So, what can we do, besides feeling guilty while dipping another biscuit into our giant wine glass?
The liver is one of the largest and busiest organs in our body.
Both Dandelion and Artichoke are used in A.Vogel's Digestisan tincture, which we use for bloatedness, flatulence and indigestion. It's a great digestive bitter that you can use before each meal to help break down fatty foods, and that may help relieve any feelings of discomfort, nausea or queasiness after rich food. Like an aperitif but much better for you! You can use this long-term if necessary.
Finally, A.Vogel's Balance Drink is a yummy strawberry-flavoured powder sachet that you can add to either water or almond milk to top up your levels of minerals like potassium, magnesium and zinc. I find this a great pick-me-up that works quickly if I've had a hectic day or a long journey in a hot car! Great after an illness for that post-viral fatigue, or if you have overindulged and are feeling ropy.

Hi Anne,
Milk Thistle extract has historically been used to support the liver by strengthening the membrane around the liver cell and increasing production of an antioxidant called glutathione. This is not actually changing the way the liver functions, so it won't affect fat metabolism or any of the other liver functions. It is more of a protective action associated with habits that put pressure on the liver, such as drinking alcohol.
