Am I menopausal? Am I not menopausal? There are so many different symptoms involved with the menopause that often it can become difficult to determine whether what you are feeling is being triggered by the menopause or by an outlying factor. In this page, our menopause expert Eileen Durward cuts through the confusion of menopausal symptoms, helping you understand whether or not you are really going through this stage of life.
The average age for experiencing the menopause is still 52, despite the media focusing on women experiencing earlier menopause. Don’t be fooled into dismissing your health issues as being part of the peri-menopause (the run up to the menopause) without very good evidence, because you may miss an important diagnosis of something else – see the alternative possibilities below.
These are genuine symptoms of the menopause:
Many of these, however, can be mistakenly blamed on the menopause when actually they are due to stress, wear and tear, and diverse other health issues that should be investigated:
So don’t rush to a diagnosis of incipient menopause. Check for other factors first. Many women find that reducing their stress levels, eating a healthier diet, exercising lightly but regularly, and prioritising sleep will reduce or remove many of the above symptoms.
Finding the right remedy to help ease your symptoms is important. Here are some for you to consider:

Hi Sonya,
This can happen during menopause, due to changes in fluid balance/ blood pressure after urinating or the bowel moving. It tends to happen if your circulatory system is quite sensitive anyway.

I have been on her for a year but I got really itchy in unmentionable places so I stopped. Wow I now feel wretched and would rather die than carry on. But what is the best thing to do.

Hi Dawn
Unfortunately, even if you have been on HRT for a short while once you stop, especially if you do it quickly, this can trigger a sudden hormonal fall back down to your own natural level and this can cause all sorts of menopause symptoms! I would go back to your doctor and explain how you are feeling, there are lots of different kinds of HRT and they may be able to find one that doesn't give you the side effects you had before.
If you want to do it naturally you may find the Menopause Support can help to ease your symptoms and acupuncture can often be beneficial and re-balancing the hormones after stopping HRT.

Hi Rachel
Unfortunately, this can happen, we know that falling oestrogen can affect blood pressure and this in turn may cause headaches. However, headaches can be caused by other factors so it is a good idea to get them checked out by your doctor. In the meantime you may find a magnesium suppelement 200mg twice a day and lots of water can help.
