Bach flower remedies take their name from Dr Edward Bach, a medical doctor, who first created them in the 1930s. They are extracts of flowers based in brandy and have the purpose of influencing the emotional well-being of the individual.
Bach flower remedies, sometimes simply known as flower remedies or flower essences, work by moderating the psychological factors involved in many of the conditions that are common in modern life.
Edward Bach felt that for many people, fears and anxieties hindered their recovery from physical illnesses. Bach began to work with the idea that illness may originate in the mind and an emotional or mental imbalance which could, over a period of time, permeate to physical levels and cause disease. He believed that bringing the mind back into a balanced, happy state could help the body to naturally self heal.
Bach’s deep love for nature led him to experiment with various remedies made from extracts of flowers. He found them to be very effective in promoting a positive frame of mind and identified twelve personality types, searching for remedies to suit each of these.
Working intuitively by tuning into the energy of plants and following the Doctrine of Signatures (the theory that a plant will give an indication of its action by its colour, shape and habits), he collected 38 remedies which became known as the Bach Flower Remedies.
The work of Bach has been continued and built on by others and new remedies beyond the initial 38 have evolved. Jan de Vries was one who recognized that modern day living put different pressures on people, and together with the advice of experienced essence practitioners put together a range of flower remedies that promote calm and facilitate emotional well being in an ever changing, fast moving world.
Jan de Vries Flower Essences are a combination of a number of flower remedies, giving a wider spectrum of activity. They work rapidly but gently on the emotions and can be taken alongside other medication.
